June is when the fireflies at the Sodalis Nature Preserve light up the night like magic. There’s slow blinking ones and fast blinking ones. It’s a late night since it doesn’t get dark until after 8:30pm but it’s worth staying up just to experience the glow of dancing lightning bugs! The full program is approximately 2 hours and covers a 2-mile paved loop with a steep incline. Participants have the option to return sooner as desired. Nature programs give us a chance to build a lifelong connection to the environment. Hannibal Parks and Recreation is offering several nature programs in June for people of all ages. The programs are led by HPR nature interpreter Gale Rublee and members of the Mississippi Hills Master Naturalists. Programs are free due to sponsorship of Hannibal BASF but signup is required at www.hannibalparks.org.
